MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- An American anti-kidnapping consultant was kidnapped in Mexico, according to the Houston-based security firm he works for.

Felix Batista was abducted outside a restaurant December 10 in Saltillo, the capital of Mexico's Coahuila state, the firm said.

The former U.S. military officer is a contract consultant for ASI Global LLC and was in Mexico "on personal business," ASI Global President Charlie LeBlanc told CNN.

He said the FBI is investigating the incident along with Mexican authorities.

Kidnappings and violence reached record levels in Mexico this year.

Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora said this month that organized-crime killings soared to 5,376 in 2008, more than double the 2,477 deaths in Mexico in 2007.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon met over the summer with the country's 32 governors to unveil a plan to combat the nation's staggering rise in kidnappings.

The plan includes building special prisons for kidnappers, bolstering the justice system, cleaning up corrupt police forces and clamping down on kidnapping tools such as prepaid cell phones and money-laundering.

increasing force on the streets rarely ever fixes the problem. Though it's harder to pull off, a stable (legit) economy is the best bet to reduce crime.

actually, i would go so far as to say that an increase in force generally increases crime.

puff another kidnapin im so tyred of listening this in the news of mexico city (for the few that doesnt know im from mexico city) but here we got 4 troubles

1 the war of the goverment against drug cartels i mean the president gots the very stupid idea of fighting against drug mafia making a war when all the damn security system is in the payroll of the mafia (example the complete sections of the federal police that is in charge of fightin the drug has a connection with the drug cartels) and one of the methods of the mafia is the kidnapin of soldiers, police, members and memeber of other cartels, torture them, cutting they're heads off and trow them in the streets with sometimes a head of a pig instead of they're own and with messages to the police or the goverment

2 kiddnapin i mean the kidnapin is terrible here theres a lot of kidnapiing in the richest families of the country (somethingf very documented in the news), but not only that theres kidnapings for only a few bucks of very poor families (something that not appears in the news)

3 this economic crisis that for the authorities in the city this could increase the common crime like robberies and belive it going to increase

4 and all this for a terrible goverment that only looks for the important business men and not to the general population
